How Access Control Systems Work for Home Security

Home security systems are an essential part of homeownership. They provide peace of mind and protection against theft and other crimes. However, there are many different types of access control systems out there. Some are better than others.

Access control systems are used to allow people into certain areas of a building or house. These systems are usually controlled by a central computer system. The computer system uses various sensors to detect who is entering the area and then allows them entry based on their identity.

There are two main types of access control systems: card readers and keypads. Card readers use a magnetic stripe on a credit card or debit card to identify the person. Keypads use a numeric code to identify the person.

Card Readers

A card reader reads information from a plastic card that has been swiped through it. This type of device can be found in most homes today. It works like this: A user inserts his or her card into the slot at the top of the unit. Then he or she slides the card down so that its magnetic strip faces the bottom of the reader. When the card passes over the sensor, it will read the data stored on the magnetic strip.

Keypads

A keypad is similar to a combination lock but instead of using numbers, you have to press buttons corresponding with your desired number. For example, if I wanted to open my front door, I would push one button labeled “1” and another labeled “2” until I got to the right sequence. Once I get to the correct sequence, I simply turn the knob to unlock the door.

Benefits of Using Card Reader vs. Keypad

The biggest benefit of having a card reader installed in your home is convenience. You don’t need to carry around keys anymore! Instead, all you do is swipe your card when you want to enter the room. If someone tries to break in while you’re away, they won’t know what number to punch in because you’ll never leave your card behind. Another advantage of using a card reader is safety.

If someone breaks into your home, chances are good that they already stole something else before coming inside. Thieves often steal items such as jewelry, electronics, cash, etc., which means they probably didn’t bring any cards along with them. With a card reader, however, thieves wouldn’t even know where to look for your valuables since they’d only find your ID.

Another reason why we recommend installing a card reader is privacy. Most keypads require users to input a four-digit PIN every time they wish to gain entrance. While some companies offer biometric scanners that eliminate the need for a password altogether, these devices aren’t always reliable. In addition, they tend to cost more money than traditional keypads.

In terms of price, both options come with pros and cons. A card reader typically costs less than $100. But depending on the brand, it may also include monthly fees. As mentioned earlier, keypads start off cheaper than card readers. But once again, they can become expensive after several years.

Home Security Systems Available in the Market

The most common type of home security system in North America today is called “door-and-window” because it controls both doors and windows. It also has motion detectors that can be set up so they will alert you if someone enters your property without permission. This kind of system is very popular with apartment dwellers because it makes it easier to monitor all entrances at once.

Another popular option is a “smart” doorbell camera. You install this device near the front entrance of your home. When anyone rings the bell, the camera automatically sends video footage to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. If you want, you can even record the conversation between the visitor and yourself using the built-in microphone.

A third option is a smart lock. A smart lock works like a combination padlock but instead of having numbers on the outside, it has a small screen where you enter a unique four-digit number. Once entered, the lock opens automatically. Smart locks have become increasingly popular as more homes get connected devices such as smartphones and tablets.

A fourth option is a wireless alarm system. Wireless alarms work much as smoke detectors do. There are several options available including ones that connect directly to your phone’s GPS location service. Others require you to download apps onto your mobile device. Either way, when triggered, these alarms send alerts to your cell phones and/or email accounts.

Use of Deadbolts

If you’re looking for something simple and inexpensive, consider installing a basic deadbolt lock. Deadbolts are easy to operate and don’t need any special equipment. Just turn the knob from inside the room until it clicks into place. Then open the door. That’s it!

Biometric Locks

For those who prefer a little extra convenience, look for a biometric lock. Biometrics are becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of operation and high level of accuracy. Most biometric locks include fingerprint scanners, retinal scans, facial recognition software, voice identification technology, etc.

Other Lock Systems

For added safety, some biometric locks come equipped with panic buttons. In case of emergency, pressing one of these buttons causes the lock to release immediately.

Some newer models offer remote locking capabilities. With these features, you can unlock your home remotely through your smartphone app.

When choosing which type of access control system to use, keep in mind what you plan to protect. For example, if you live alone, a traditional keypad might not be enough. On the other hand, if you own a large estate, a sophisticated electronic monitoring system could make sense. Whatever you choose, remember that each system comes with its advantages and disadvantages. So weigh the benefits carefully before making a decision.
